The words of the gallery
“For our first exhibition at Place des Vosges, in Paris, we wanted to offer the public an opportunity to discover the period of painting and drawing that, from 2001 to 2009, took Robert Clévier to the vineyards of Bordeaux and Champagne. Rediscover, rather, since after their exhibition at the Grandes Heures de Saint-Emilion, these paintings had only been shown in Paris on one occasion, twelve years ago.
We also wanted to present these paintings in a new light. For the first time, paintings and graphic works, lead pencils and pastels on paper, can be seen side by side, in a form of counterpoint and, we hope, a silent dialogue that the public will hear”.
The artwords of the artist
“How can you distinguish the vineyards of Champagne from those you see elsewhere ? Here, as there, everything seems made of order and grandeur, of the same rhythmic struggle, already victorious against accident.
In this labyrinth, where is not the accident that would suddenly tell of what it denies, but “That je ne sais quoi, so little that it cannot be known, (which) stirs the whole earth” (Blaise Pascal) – a creature, a Living One at last ?
In short, these landscapes, cemeteries of a thousand springs – of the eternity of attention paid, of gestures and of those who raise – these landscapes first look at me; in Champagne they whisper: do beyond what you can; we’ll see !”.
